Dr. Sells is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry. With a career spanning over three decades, he has combined clinical practice, teaching, and leadership to advance psychiatric education and patient care. His work focuses on training the next generation of healthcare professionals while maintaining an active role in clinical psychiatry.

Leadership Experience & Service

Dr. Sells has served as Associate Chief of Staff for Education (ACOS-E) at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) since 2008. In this role, he oversees educational partnerships with five major medical affiliates, including Meharry Medical College, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, TriStar HCA in Nashville, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Nashville, and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, as well as numerous associated health programs. He previously served as Chief of Psychiatry and Director of Outpatient Psychiatric Services at the Nashville VA. Dr. Sells is also currently serving in the VISN 9 Academic Affiliations Office, supporting medical education initiatives across the network.

Dr. Sells’ professional focus is on advancing psychiatric education and improving mental health care delivery. He has played a pivotal role in shaping residency training and interdisciplinary education within the VA system and its affiliates. His leadership has strengthened collaborations between academic institutions and the VA to enhance opportunities for learners and improve patient outcomes.

Current Role & Responsibilities

As ACOS-E at TVHS, Dr. Sells manages affiliations with multiple medical schools and health programs, fostering a strong educational environment for medical students, residents, and fellows. He continues to see patients and teach while leading efforts to enhance educational quality and expand training opportunities for future healthcare professionals.
