Dr. Ikizler is a physician-scientist and nephrologist focused on caring for patients living with chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, with a career spanning clinical care, research, and mentorship.
Leadership Experience & Service
Dr. Ikizler is also Director of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
Professional Focus & Achievements
Dr. Ikizler’s research centers on the nutritional and metabolic aspects of acute and chronic diseases, with a strong emphasis on clinical translational science. He has co-authored more than 450 scientific publications. He has maintained continuous funding through the National Institutes of Health and VA Merit grants. His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous honors, including the National Kidney Foundation Joel Kopple Award, the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism Thomas Addis Award, and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Excellence in Mentoring Translational Scientist Award.
Current Role & Responsibilities
Dr. Ikizler has been a staff physician at the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System since 1996, when he first joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Alongside his clinical and research responsibilities, he dedicates a significant portion of his time to mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists, having guided more than 30 fellows and junior faculty over the past two decades.
